Strategies of the Lord – Now Think On This by Steve Martin

“So the man became exceedingly prosperous, and had large flocks and female and male servants and camels and donkeys.” (Genesis 30:43, NASU)

For too long I have watched Christians follow the patterns of the secular world when it comes to doing a basic thing, like making money. It seems they get the big ideas – “Let’s make a really smart phone and call it, well, the “iPhone” (after all, our company name is “Apple”), or “We need a new search engine name. How about something crazy like “Google”? (See below, way below, for how the name actually came forth. But only after you read my article first!)

The world comes up with a slogan like, “Coke is the real thing.” So next thing we know the Christians are marketing items with, “Jesus is the real thing.”

Or wearing a t-shirt with Jesus in sunglasses, quoting the movie, “I’ll be back.”. Is “The Terminator” (Arnold Schwarzenegger) now the one Jesus is to model after? It should be the other way around.

Don’t we have it backwards? Aren’t we called to be the leaders, the innovators, the ones with the answers?

Take the Hollywood movie producers who create the bigtime blockbuster, and soon after the faith community attempts to produce something in the same genre, and it flops. (But we are getting better! There have been some really good faith-based movies in the last five years.)

If you have been paying attention you will know where much of the new technology is now coming from. The Jews in Israel! Warren Buffet sure is investing there.

I had a young man call me once at my Christian ministry administrative office years back, all excited about coming up with a car flag to hang out the window with a Bible or catchy saying on it. He had seen the sports flags being hung from car windows, every Saturday and Sunday in his town. He said we needed to do the same.

As he spoke on the phone, I was silently thinking to myself, “Is this how we do it? We copy what the world system puts out, only with a “Christian” flavor to it?”

Why is this so? As followers of the Creator Himself, we should be the ones who receive the brilliant ideas, the inventive solutions, the strategies of the Lord. We have the heavenly connection, through the Holy Spirit, to know the thoughts and plans of the Lord. He is the brilliant One! Just look at the human body, the vast solar system, the depths of the massive oceans. What an Awesome God He is!

We are the ones who need to listen to what He is saying, as He desires to give us the strategies and the means to produce wealth and bring solutions to all kinds of problems, which in turn will serve our fellow man.

When I asked the Lord this Monday as to what I should be reading in His Word, He clearly said, “Jacob.” That was not what I was expecting, but I went to the book of Genesis and have been reading about Jacob. Fascinating.

In just a quick overview, Jacob had served his father-in-law Laban for over 14 years, in order to have his daughter Rachel as his wife. (If you recall, Laban had instead given Jacob his eldest Leah on his wedding night, being the deceiver that Laban was. And we thought Jacob was the deceiver?) Many years later, when Jacob was finally fed up with it all, and ready to move on from under this unrighteousness, the Lord gave him the means to do it.

“Then Jacob took fresh rods of poplar and almond and plane trees, and peeled white stripes in them, exposing the white which was in the rods. He set the rods which he had peeled in front of the flocks in the gutters, even in the watering troughs, where the flocks came to drink; and they mated when they came to drink.

So the flocks mated by the rods, and the flocks brought forth striped, speckled, and spotted. Jacob separated the lambs, and made the flocks face toward the striped and all the black in the flock of Laban; and he put his own herds apart, and did not put them with Laban’s flock.

Moreover, whenever the stronger of the flock were mating, Jacob would place the rods in the sight of the flock in the gutters, so that they might mate by the rods; but when the flock was feeble, he did not put them in; so the feebler were Laban’s and the stronger Jacob’s. So the man became exceedingly prosperous, and had large flocks and female and male servants and camels and donkeys.” (Genesis 30:37-43, NASU)

Now that is a strategy that you just can’t make up on your own. God did it for him.

I struggle in my faith often, trying to come up with ways to fund the ministry the Lord has called my wife and I to do. There are several projects we are aiming to meet needs with His provision.

Our heart is to have the means for international pastors and young people to make a once-in-a-life-time trip to Israel, to stand where Jesus (Yeshua) stood. We have been given the heart by our Lord to provide Bibles for those who don’t have one in foreign countries; another is to make ways to provide for the children of widows who struggle daily with food, clothing and shelter; also to help support Messianic families in the Holy Land on a regular basis, as they reach out to others around them.

I know the Lord knows the way to get it done. I am pressing into Him to know His strategies. He will show me, and you, the way to go to get it done.

Shalom and ahava (peace and love in Hebrew).

Origin of the name “Google”

From time to time I read or hear stories of the origin of the search engine and company name “Google” that are incorrect, which prompts me to write this brief account, based on my understanding of the genesis of the name. The source of my information is my friends and colleagues from Wing 3B of the Gates Computer Science Building at Stanford University, where Google was born.

In 1996, Larry Page and Sergey Brin called their initial search engine “BackRub,” named for its analysis of the web’s “back links.” Larry’s office was in room 360 of the Gates CS Building, which he shared with several other graduate students, including Sean Anderson, Tamara Munzner, and Lucas Pereira. In 1997, Larry and his officemates discussed a number of possible new names for the rapidly improving search technology. Sean recalls the final brainstorming session as occurring one day during September of that year.
Sean and Larry were in their office, using the whiteboard, trying to think up a good name – something that related to the indexing of an immense amount of data. Sean verbally suggested the word “googolplex,” and Larry responded verbally with the shortened form, “googol” (both words refer to specific large numbers). Sean was seated at his computer terminal, so he executed a search of the Internet domain name registry database to see if the newly suggested name was still available for registration and use.
Sean is not an infallible speller, and he made the mistake of searching for the name spelled as “google.com,” which he found to be available. Larry liked the name, and within hours he took the step of registering the name “google.com” for himself and Sergey (the domain name registration record dates from September 15, 1997).

IS IT GOD OR IS IT SATAN? – Now Think On This by Steve Martin

“Therefore consider the goodness and severity of God: on those who fell, severity; but toward you, goodness, if you continue in His goodness. Otherwise you also will be cut off.” (Romans 11:22, NKJV)

Judgment or just “Mother Nature”? The hand of God or “global warming”? God or Satan?

Many opinions, many voices, many on both sides trying to tell us what is going on. Who are you to believe? Should you fear the Lord, in reverence and awe, or should you fear the devil, who always attempts to imitate his Creator? Which is it? Or rather, who is it?

As a believer in the Lord Jesus, Yeshua, I must look to the Written Word, the Bible, the Torah, the Tanakh, to find the answers. Even with all the prophetic voices giving what may seem to be conflicting declarations at times, discernment and clarity can be achieved and known. God Himself has spoken, and written it down. We need not be as those who have no understanding. We can, and must, know the will of the Lord and what He is doing in our times. For these are indeed the end of days, the end of this time, the pre-lude to what is yet to come.

How do I know? Because His very Word tells me so. Yes, “the Bible tells me so.”

Who was the one who made the following occur? God or Satan? The answer is written by God Himself, as these historical events happened and were recorded. (Red emphasis mine for emphasis!)

  1. “Then I myself will bring the flood of water over the earth to destroy from under heaven every living thing that breathes; everything on earth will be destroyed. But I will establish my covenant with you; you will come into the ark, you, your sons, your wife and your sons’ wives with you.” Genesis 6:17-18 (Complete Jewish Bible)
  1. “Lot lifted up his eyes and saw all the valley of the Jordan, that it was well watered everywhere — this was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.” Genesis 13:10 (NASU)
  1. ‘I sent Moshe and Aharon, I inflicted plagues on Egypt in accordance with what I did among them, and afterwards I brought you out.” Joshua 24:5-6 (CJB)
  1.  And even the Lord’s servants had His power granted to them: “And Elijah answered and said to the captain of fifty, If I be a man of God, then let fire come down from heaven, and consume thee and thy fifty. And there came down fire from heaven, and consumed him and his fifty.” 2 Kings 1:10 (KJV)

And the entire Book of Revelation, as Jesus Himself told to John, isn’t a make-believe story or a book of images to allow us to make up our own fascinations and metaphors. It is real, and will really happen.

Talk about watching a reality show – this is the big one.

Many living today will see it, right before their very eyes. It doesn’t take a brain scientist to figure out what the Lord is clearly saying. (It does take a fool to say it is just global warming, or just “the same old same old”.)

Is God a good God? Yes He is! Does God love all of mankind? Yes He does! He sent His Only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, Yeshua HaMashiach, to save all who will come to Him, repent, and receive His eternal salvation for their spirit, soul and body.

Will God judge sinners? Yes He will. He cannot and will not allow evil, unrighteousness, death and destruction to continue on forever without judgment. Those who refuse to repent and believe – judgment is coming. It is coming even now upon earth.

These hurricanes, earthquakes, floods, signs in the heavens…ALL are from the Lord, Creator of heaven and earth. They are His attempt to get mankind to come to Him, call on His name, and receive eternal salvation before they face eternal hell, separated forever apart from Him.

The trumpet is being blown. The shofar has sounded. The angels have been released to do their assigned tasks, to help bring in the harvest.

Do not be deceived and think we can go on living, doing our own thing, believing in the lies and deception that the Lord has no say in it. He does. He is clearly speaking – loud and very clear.

And we must do our part in sharing His Good News to all who have ears to hear. Before it is too late.

Shalom and ahava (peace and love in Hebrew).

Not A Numbers Game – Now Think On This by Steve Martin

Make me grasp, Adonai, what my end must be, what it means that my days are numbered; (Psalm 39:5, Complete Jewish Bible)

On September 21, 2017 (based on the solar Gregorian calendar), Rosh Hashanah began at sundown on the Jewish lunar calendar. That day was the 1st of Tishrei, 5778. I have seen several articles written on the meaning of the new Hebrew year 5778, and find them all very fascinating.

The Lord our God is very, very detailed in all His ways. Just looking at the solar system, the formation of the earth itself, and then the created body that each one of us has – what an amazing Creator He is!  As the Psalms’ verse has been written, our days are numbered. He knows every second of every hour of every day of every year. He knows the numbers.

You and I can rest in the fact that He has His hand on everything, and as we put our continual trust in Him, He will make Himself more fully known and show us just how He has all of our ways He directs us in are certainly in good order.

Being a numbers guy, an accountant by trade, I pay attention to time, clocks, watches and calendars. My home ministry office has a shelf dedicated to clocks! (Just ask my good wife.)

In any given day, I am watching (no pun intended) to see when events happen, what prophetic meaning they have, and what the Lord is saying through them. He is speaking all the time to us through these time-tracking pieces, and we are wise if we discern what He is declaring. Sometimes what He is telling us is very loud and clear – through nature around us. Sometimes He speaks in a mystery, wanting us to search out further that which He is sharing with us.

One aspect of time that I believe is occurring is the acceleration of it as we know it, in this time and space. I wrote in my book “Prophetic Stories – Signs Along the Way” several years ago on how the Holy Spirit spoke to me of that acceleration. Since then, I can see it picking up further speed, as He brings about His purposes in our lives.

Are you aware of any acceleration in your life?

Here is just one example in my walk I want to tell you about, to demonstrate the acceleration I believe we are living in. It is very simple, but at the same time, I believe it is a demonstration of what the Lord is doing in my life, and in many lives around the world.

In 2010, during the very early days of Love For His People, I started the blog of the same name. In that year I had a total of 24 posts, with less than 500 page views. Wow! I was excited. It then took until December 30, 2014, to reach 500,000 (four years later).

On Sunday, March 27, 2016, the page views total reached 1 million, taking just one year and three months to reach the second mark of 500,000, for a total of five years and three months to reach the million plateau. What was to be noted about this was that it occurred on that special Sunday on the Christian calendar – Resurrection Day! Again, I was excited!

On January 30, 2017, the blog page views reached 1,500,000. This time it had taken only nine months to reach this level since the million mark was surpassed. Time and counts were speeding up. The hand of the Lord was upon this.

On September 20, 2017, when the sun had barely gone down in Jerusalem to start the new year, 5778, on Rosh Hashanah (Yom Teruah), the blog page views surpassed the 2,000,000 mark. I was at my accounting job and was able to watch the count every so often to see when it crossed that line. It did so at 2 pm (Charlotte, North Carolina EDT), 9 pm Jerusalem time. That mark had come just eight months later since reaching 1,500,000 before.

As you can see, I was able to record all of these snapshots of numbers on the website when they had occurred in time.

While it took five years and three months to reach the first million, from 2010 to early 2016, it had taken only one year and six months later on September 20, 2017, the Jewish New Year start at sundown in Jerusalem, to reach the second million mark.

To some, this may seem trite, or just some math fan coming up with another numbers game. But to me, it is the Lord again reaffirming His plans that He is working out, faster and faster, as getting the Gospel out to the nations is at the top of His list.

Many are now able to see more quickly what is happening, primarily through the Internet, using smartphones and all mobile devices as soon as it happens, almost anywhere in the world. That in itself is a fulfillment of prophecy.

This increasingly fast-moving timeline of the Lord is being fulfilled just as He had Daniel pen these scriptural words centuries ago.

“When that time comes, Mikha’el, the great prince who champions your people, will stand up; and there will be a time of distress unparalleled between the time they became a nation and that moment. At that time, your people will be delivered, everyone whose name is found written in the book. Many of those sleeping in the dust of the earth will awaken, some to everlasting life and some to everlasting shame and abhorrence.

But those who can discern will shine like the brightness of heaven’s dome, and those who turn many to righteousness like the stars forever and ever.

“But you, Dani’el, keep these words secret, and seal up the book until the time of the end. Many will rush here and there as knowledge increases.” (emphasis added, Daniel 12:1-4, Complete Jewish Bible)

I trust you are watching and waiting, but also sharing at the same time the Good News to those who believers needing the encouragement found in this hope, and to those who need to know the Savior Jesus Christ, Yeshua HaMashiach.

Shalom and ahava (peace and love in Hebrew).

Come Hell or High Water – Now Think On This by Steve Martin

“When the days were approaching for His ascension, He was determined to go to Jerusalem;”

(Luke 9:51, NASU)

Strong-willed, adamant, purposeful, “will take no for an answer” are just a few descriptive words used for the saying, “Come hell or high water.” I tried finding out where this saying was first spoken, but couldn’t get much from my online search.

It was probably declared by John Wayne back in the prime time years for movies, when he saddled up his mighty steed to rescue a fair maiden from the hands of cattle rustlers. Or it could have been Robin Hood, in the pursuit of his beloved Maid Marian. Maybe Rocky Balboa said it before his first boxing match in Philly? Most likely it was proclaimed even before his time.

I can imagine an American Marine, just before landing on Normandy beach for D-Day back on June 6, 1994, yelling it to his fellow buddies, wanting to just finish that awful World War II.

Nonetheless, whoever declared his determination to get the job done, no matter what the cost, certainly had to have courage and fortitude.

Jesus knew what the cost would be, when His Father commissioned Him to become as a man, to save us from sin and eternal damnation in hell. A real mission, needing a real Savior, to deliver us from a real hell. Being He knows all and sees all, back then, now and forever, He did what it took to get the job done. There was no backing down from accomplishing His goal.

I admire the courage of Ruth, who did what her heart had purposed to do, when her mother-in-law suggested otherwise, about turning back to her homeland.

“But Ruth said, “Do not urge me to leave you or turn back from following you; for where you go, I will go, and where you lodge, I will lodge.

Your people shall be my people, and your God, my God. “Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. Thus may the Lord do to me, and worse, if anything but death parts you and me.”

When she saw that she was determined to go with her, she said no more to her.” (Ruth 1:16-18, NASU)

We must determine in our hearts to do what is right, before we are put on the spot requiring a decision. We must make it clear in our own minds that when the Lord calls upon us to do something, we will not sit back, debate it within ourselves and with others, or think His word is for another person, at another place, or for another time. We are living in the days when our stand for truth must withstand the onslaught of the enemy, who presses forward to take us down.

Today, courage and strength are both much needed in the lives of believers around the world. We have a prime target on our backs, and our enemy, the devil and his wretched demons, have come from hell, bent on killing us. He hates Jesus, therefore he hates those who call themselves His disciples and followers.

Come hell or high water, by His grace we will stand.

And stand we must.

This is who we are called to be – witnesses for the Most High God, testifying of His goodness, His redemptive plan, and the salvation that is found only in the saving power in His pure blood, shed mercifully on the cross for all who will call upon His Name. With Him as our solid rock on which we stand, it is our God, the Lord Jesus Christ, Who will bring us through to the end.

Believe it, and carry on.

Shalom and ahava (peace and love in Hebrew).

Who Is This One? – The Holy Spirit – Now Think On This by Steve Martin

“Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” (Romans 15:13, NKJV)

The Holy Trinity – God the Father (Abba), Jesus Christ the Son (Yeshua HaMashiach), and Holy Spirit (Ruach HaKodesh) – all reign on high together. They are the Three in One as the Eternal Godhead, each purposing together to fulfill the plans They laid out since before the foundations of the earth, before the beginning of time. Together they always were and always shall be.

Do you know the Holy Spirit? Has He been a vital part in your believing walk? He wants you to know Him, for He is the Comforter, the Helper, the One whom Yeshua (Jesus) sent after His ascension into heaven, as He promised He would come.

“These things I have spoken to you while being present with you.  But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.

Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

You have heard Me say to you, ‘I am going away and coming back to you.’ If you loved Me, you would rejoice because I said, ‘I am going to the Father,’ for My Father is greater than I.” (John 14:25-28, NKJV)

For a long time Christians spoke of the Holy Spirit as the Holy Ghost, as translated in the King James version of the Bible. To me, that seemed to give Him an eerie, far-off image of one who was spooky and somewhat aloof. Our concept of this One, the third person of the Holy Trinity, was as an after thought. “And oh yes, the one who we don’t really know much about. Thus we will focus on God the Father and Jesus the Son.”

We need to understand that this One, Whom so desires to be very close to us, wanting us to be intimately familiar with Him, has been given to us for our daily walk. He has been sent from heaven to lead us, direct our steps, and comfort us along the path.

He is not some ghostly image flying about the sky doing weird things. He is God Himself, coming to us in all power and in full measure of the Father and the Son.

Often associated with the acts of the Holy Spirit are the resulting acts of those whom He has touched, often in a very emotional, sensational way. So what else would you expect when the God of the Universe comes and touches the lives of those who have sought God, who walk around on this earth? What else should we experience when the most powerful One chooses to reveal and manifest Himself to mankind, specifically you and I, and those who ask Him to do so?

What we see, feel and hear, as a result of His coming in those moments, in time and space, is demonstrated in our physical bodies because of the presence of the Eternal, Spiritual One responding to our need for Him in a very real way. If what we experience wasn’t supernatural, then He wouldn’t be Supernatural.

The world is seeking the supernatural. It is very obvious in our movies, books, websites, and media of all kinds as to what people are seeking after. They know there is spiritual activity going on around this planet. But what they seek needs to be the Creator, not the evil created one.

In my senior year of Columbus High School, a Catholic parochial school in 1973, in Waterloo, Iowa, the Holy Spirit came to me when a few of my classmates asked Him to come and fill me with His presence. I wanted more than what the natural life was giving me. Having seen His work in their lives, I certainly knew there was more for this one, and He delivered!

The baptism of the Holy Spirit isn’t something to write-off as for “only back then and never again.” When He comes and fills you with His very presence, in your spirit, soul, and body, there will be a reaction. There will be a manifestation. There we will a newness, freshness, most powerful demonstration of God that just inhabited you in your very being, down to the very core of your inner man. This is nothing to be feared or stay away from. He is meant to be Who He is, and will show Himself to you in a way you have never experienced before. That is Who He is.

The gifts that Holy Spirit gives us, very supernatural in power and energy, are most needed in our times, these end of days. They are not an option. We must confront the powers of darkness arrayed against the Body of Christ specifically, and mankind in general, with them. Speaking in tongues, the gift of healing and miracles, discernment of spirits, prophetic declarations…these are necessary weapons we need to use. The devil fights with his arsenal. Believers better be equipped and trained in the gifts that the God of the Universe has for us, through His Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is very real. He is fully alive. He has chosen to be with those who have sought His gifts, His power, His promised fulfillment to be with us as we purpose to do the will of God the Father and Yeshua His Son. If ever there was a time when we needed the third Person of the Trinity it is definitely now.

Daily I need to pray, “Come Holy Spirit. Fill me with Your wisdom, Your understanding, Your clarity and knowledge of who I am, where I am to go, and how You want it done through my life, this day.” That has to be our desire and prayer if we are to fulfill the call on our lives to bring the saving Gospel of salvation to this terrified, dying and certainly lost world of people.

Come Holy Spirit! We need Your presence and power in our lives this day! Thank you that You are our Comforter and will be with us through it all!

Shalom and ahava (peace and love in Hebrew).

Roots – Now Think On This by Steve Martin

“It was beautiful in its greatness and the length of its branches, because its roots went down to plenty of water.” (Ezekiel 31:7, Complete Jewish Bible)

In 1977, and again in 2016, Americans were fascinated by the TV mini-series Roots, the well-done dramatization of author Alex Haley’s book detailing his family line, from ancestor Kunta Kinte’s enslavement, beginning in Africa to his descendants’ liberation in the United States.

The website Ancestry.com sure saw its page visits shoot up during those seasons, and our fascination with our historical roots continues to this day.

People want to know their roots – where they have come from – to give them some indication of the who, what, where, why and so what questions all have had. You and I can be fascinated with shows like Who Do You Think You Are? on the TLC TV network. I know Laurie and I are. I am sure we have watched every episode!

And now today, you can get your DNA tested for only $69. When it hits the low, low price of $19.99 then I will too!

What nation are you from? Who are your descendants? Who do you think you are?

Now think about this. Do you realize that all of us must have embedded genes from Noah and his family? They were the only ones of the human race who were not destroyed during the great, worldwide historical flood. After death and destruction were complete, these eight, if my math is right, were the only ones left to repopulate the earth.

So that makes you and I related. Right? That means my family and your family are truly brothers and sisters in the Creator’s immense family. True? Do you believe it? I certainly do.

Let’s go to the Scriptures, which are the solid, firm foundation of all truth, upon which anyone who will stand upon them will know the truth, from the very beginning. The roots of mankind are revealed in these truthful words of God.

“For after seven more days I will cause it to rain on the earth forty days and forty nights, and I will destroy from the face of the earth all living things that I have made.” And Noah did according to all that the Lord commanded him. Noah was six hundred years old when the floodwaters were on the earth.

So Noah, with his sons, his wife, and his sons’ wives, went into the ark because of the waters of the flood. Of clean animals, of animals that are unclean, of birds, and of everything that creeps on the earth, two by two they went into the ark to Noah, male and female, as God had commanded Noah.

And it came to pass after seven days that the waters of the flood were on the earth. In the six-hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the fountains of the great deep were broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened. And the rain was on the earth forty days and forty nights.

On the very same day Noah and Noah’s sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth, and Noah’s wife and the three wives of his sons with them, entered the ark…” (Genesis 7:4-13, NKJV)

So if I read this simply as it is stated, very plain for all of us to understand, ONLY Noah and his family were the remaining humans, along with the gathered animals, birds, reptiles and insects in that massive boat, who were left after the total destructing flood. (The fish had their own safety habitat!) And then it rained, with the massive flood coming, destroying all else.

I am glad these words aren’t fairy tales or Sunday school stories, taught to kids, to “convey” some made-up story about God and how we got the rainbow (which, by the way, is the Lord’s creation, not some wicked taken-over symbol of sinful men and women.) These things really happened. Read the true scientific facts, which abound in proven publications from all over the earth. And then watch TV to see how water can yet destroy today.

“The flood continued forty days and the waters rose and lifted the ship high over the Earth. The waters kept rising, the flood deepened on the Earth, the ship floated on the surface. The flood got worse until all the highest mountains were covered – the high water mark reached twenty feet above the crest of the mountains. Everything died. Anything that moved — dead. Birds, farm animals, wild animals, the entire teeming exuberance of life – dead. And all people – dead. Every living, breathing creature that lived on dry land died; he wiped out the whole works – people and animals, crawling creatures and flying birds, every last one of them, gone. Only Noah and his company on the ship lived. The floodwaters took over for 150 days.” (Genesis 7:17-24, THE MESSAGE)

In going a step further, that means people all over the world now are family. Good ol’ Ralph is related to Ingrid, who is related to Ming Sun Lee, maybe even the 43rd cousin of Abdul, from the family branch descendant of Japeth, or Shem, or Ham. Or even Noah and his wife himself. Make sense? Sure it does!

Going a step further, if you call yourself a Christian, then do you know who your family tree is? Who are the roots from which your life of faith has been built on?

It is the Jews! The roots of our tree, the olive tree, are the Jews!

Continuing down through the lineage of Noah, through Abraham, then King David, with Yeshua being of the tribe of Judah, along with the Jewish disciples of Mattityahu (Matthew), Yohanan (John), and Ya’akov (Jacob)…all Hebrews/Jews…the roots, both natural and then spiritual…brought forth the olive tree from which Christianity emerged. These are our roots, our Jewish roots.

The roots of our faith, which the Lord God Almighty Himself created, were delivered to us through the Jews. Deny the Jews and you are ultimately denying the very One from Whom salvation has come.

The Apostle Paul, formerly known with his given name Saul, being a Jew from birth – who believed in Messiah (Christ) after his awesome revelation and confrontation with Truth, in the person of the resurrected Savior, Yeshua – makes it clear as to whose roots make up and supply the vast olive tree from which you and I, believers in Yeshua (His Jewish/Hebrew name even today as He is seated in heaven), grow out of. Written Scriptures, inspired by the Holy Spirit through Paul, were recorded as letters by him to Jews and Gentiles, who had become believers in Yeshua.

“For if the first fruit is holy, the lump is also holy; and if the root is holy, so are the branches. And if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive tree, were grafted in among them, and with them became a partaker of the root and fatness of the olive tree, do not boast against the branches. But if you do boast, remember that you do not support the root, but the root supports you.

You will say then, “Branches were broken off that I might be grafted in.” Well said. Because of unbelief, they were broken off, and you stand by faith. Do not be haughty, but fear. For if God did not spare the natural branches, He may not spare you either. Therefore consider the goodness and severity of God: on those who fell, severity; but toward you, goodness, if you continue in His goodness. Otherwise, you also will be cut off.

And they also, if they do not continue in unbelief, will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again. For if you were cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and were grafted contrary to nature into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these, who are natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree?” (Romans 11:16-24, NKJV)

Understand? (as my boss would say). The Jews are the olive tree, roots and all. Believing Gentiles are grafted-in branches, who, if having called on the Name of the Lord, Yeshua HaMashiach also, believers in the Jewish Messiah, the Christ of the world, by faith are the wild olive branches grafted into the natural Jewish olive tree. And without the roots, no branch of the tree will survive and flourish.

Bottom line (part of my accounting roots lingo), Paul says that the natural branches, the Jews, in time will also be grafted back onto their own olive tree. The time will come when they will acknowledge that their very own brother, the Lamb of God, the soon coming Lion of the tribe of Judah, is indeed the long awaited Messiah. He came once to His own, the Chosen Ones, the Jews, and He is coming again for them, and all of us who have believed.

Yet to come along and be grafted in are all those who will also come to repentance from sin, come to the saving shed blood and everlasting grace of Yeshua, Jesus, and be included.

Without roots, no plant can survive. The necessary watering channel and delivery of nutrients from the deep ground up must occur for ongoing life. From the beginning, the Lord has chosen the Jews to be the roots of the tree. Without the Jews, no Bible would have been written. No Torah would have been scribed. No Savior would have been born.

That’s the way God planned it. That’s the way God meant it to be! (Is that a song I remember…?)

I am most thankful for my Jewish roots. I trust you will be too.

Shalom and ahava (peace and love in Hebrew).

40 Something? Now Think On This by Steve Martin

“Now David the son of Jesse reigned over all Israel. The period which he reigned over Israel was forty years; he reigned in Hebron seven years and in Jerusalem thirty-three years.” (1 Chronicles 29:26-27, NASU)

Have you ever wondered what 40 will get you? No, I am not thinking about what prison sentence comes with what crime. I think about all the times the Lord God of the Living Bible uses numbers to get across His point, or to bring about His purpose in a person, people group or nation.

When I use my PC Bible Study software to give me all the references to the number 40, it stops after just one Bible version. There are just too many to list them all! And that is just with the number 40!

Here are a few samples of the ones most known about, which are historical facts, not just figments of imaginations, or used just to give some idea of the length of time. No, they are real periods that occurred in history. And they meant something then and can serve as a measure of time for us today.

The following are all from the ERV version, which uses “40” instead of “forty”.

  1. Gen 7:11 “The rain fell on the earth for 40 days and 40 nights.”
  2. Gen 25:20 “When Isaac was 40 years old, he married Rebekah.”
  3. Ex 16:35-36 “The people ate the manna for 40 years, until they came to the land of rest, that is, until they came to the edge of the land of Canaan.”
  4. Ex 24:18 “Then Moses went higher up the mountain into the cloud. He was on the mountain for 40 days and 40 nights.”
  5. Numbers 13:25-26 “The men (10 spies) explored that country for 40 days, and then they went back to the camp.”
  6. Joshua 14:7 “(Joshua speaking) Moses, the Lord’s servant, sent me to look at the land where we were going. I was 40 years old at that time.”
  7.  2 Sam 5:4-5 “David was 30 years old when he began to rule. He was king for 40 years. In Hebron he ruled over Judah for 7 years and 6 months, and in Jerusalem he ruled over all Israel and Judah for 33 years.”
  8. 2 Chronicles 9:30 “Solomon ruled in Jerusalem over all Israel for 40 years.”
  9.  Matt 4:2-3 “Jesus ate nothing for 40 days and nights. After this, he was very hungry.”
  10.  Acts 13:21 “Saul was from the tribe of Benjamin. He was king for 40 years.”

As I meditate on these verses, and what transpired in each one, I see testing (40 days or 40 years) and rulership (40 years for these kings). For several there were 40 days or 40 years of testing, walking it out in faith (or until they were released from unbelief.) For others, it was 40 years of ruling as a king.

Maybe in your life, as in mine, you can see time periods of 40 days, or on a longer length, 40 years, as a time period in which the Lord was working something out, or putting something in – preparing you for the call He has on your life.

When I was 23, I never thought it would take 40 years to follow, in preparation for the final call on my life; when I would “retire” from one segment to begin what I consider will be the best and final one. I am “retiring” on October 31, 2017 from my accounting job that has consumed 55 hours per week of my time. When I turn 63 on November 23, 40 years will have gone by since that 23rd year, when I got married.

Celebrating our 40th anniversary of marriage on October 7, 2017, will be a major accomplishment for Laurie and I. Was it all a “time of testing” in order to build the foundational pad needed to launch from, out into the “promised land” (atmosphere)?  I think maybe so. Then the ruling will begin, as a king, for we have been prepared to take the Gospel even further into territories from our home base.

What has been your 40 days, or 40 years? I would bet (surely there is a verse for that!) that if you look hard enough backward in your natural and spiritual walk, you too will see what the Lord has done, where He has taken you, and who around you is now involved with the plans and purposes the Lord, God of Israel, has in store for you too.

I find it very interesting, and encouraging. I think you will too.

Shalom and ahava (peace and love in Hebrew).

Forgive, Forget, Move On – Now Think On This by Steve Martin

“Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:13-15, NASU)

Have you ever noticed the “tools of the trade” that fishermen, who want to catch the bottom-feeding fish, use? One of them that I am aware of is the sinker, the little lead ball-shaped object. Once tightly fastened to the fishing line, not too far from the hook and bait, its purpose is to take the fishing bait to the bottom of the pond or lake. That is where the bottom-feeders are sucking up what garbage and other less-nutrient food particles end up once they have fallen to the bottom. Down to where it is dark and murky.

The enemy of our soul likes to hang around bottom-feeders. These are the ones who have been hurt, wounded and continue to walk around in bitterness. They too would rather live where it is dark and murky; where leaden lines bring down more bait to subsist on. Rather than forgive and forget, as we are commanded to do, they choose to hang onto the hardness of heart which has resulted, and stay as they are. Living in darkness, in the basement, means you don’t have to face the light. “No more chance to get hurt again by others” is your mindset.

But in fact, it is the light which will save you from the darkness. It is getting the infection out, the scab removed, the hurt and wounds healed that will give you the life you were meant to be free to participate in. The cross of Jesus sets us free from all this.

I have seen many people wounded in their walk with Christian brethren, both from leadership and other members of the church congregation. Rather than walk in forgiveness and forgetting what lies behind, they instead make the choice to not let go of the hurt and carry their wounds. What once was great fellowship and sharing a common bond in the Lord’s grace and mercy, it has instead become an infected sore, which never seems to go away. Another church, another day, another attempt at hiding it away doesn’t make it go away.

“Bear with one another; if anyone has a complaint against someone else, forgive him. Indeed, just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you must forgive.” (Colossians 3:13, Complete Jewish Bible)

The ones who resist the command to forgive will continue to grow in the hardness of heart, the darkness, that robs all of the freedom to walk in love. By not letting go, through the act of forgiveness, will keep you from the trust and forbearance we need in walking with one another. The new relationships you will endeavor to make will have the shadow of the previous ones preventing you from true fellowship.

We must learn to forgive each other continually, forgetting the past, and move on to fulfill the call and purpose we each have in the Body of Messiah. There are too many dying people out there whom we are sent to help, but will not be able to if we insist on protecting our space and not letting these things go.

“Above all these, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together perfectly; and let the shalom which comes from the Messiah be your heart’s decision-maker, for this is why you were called to be part of a single Body.

And be thankful – let the Word of the Messiah, in all its richness, live in you, as you teach and counsel each other in all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude to God in your hearts. That is, everything you do or say, do in the name of the Lord Yeshua, giving thanks through him to God the Father.” (Colossians 3:14-17, Complete Jewish Bible)

We don’t have the “luxury” of being bottom-feeders. We can’t continue to let offenses, being offended, and petty arguments keep us from walking in the light.

We must bring everything to the His light, to forgive those who hurt us, and get on with the work we instead must be doing. There are bigger issues to deal with, so walking in forgiveness daily is a necessity.

I have been hurt. You have been hurt. Insisting on living in unforgiveness will only deepen the infection that Jesus Christ died for, to save you from.

We must repent from our sin of allowing unforgiveness to rule in our hearts. There must not be any place for it in your life, nor mine.

I am still learning how to live in forgiving others. Some days are better than others, but I have no choice but choose forgiveness, if I am to do that which He has saved me to do, and requiring of me to walk out.

I hope you are too.

Shalom and ahava (peace and love in Hebrew).
